Tackling Fish Consumption Risks
Our study of Anacostia River anglers reveals the extensive consumption and sharing of contaminated fish, driven by food insecurity in nearby neighborhoods. Interviews and focus groups uncovered anglers’ limited awareness of health risks and highlighted the need for more effective communication tailored to this multilingual audience.
Funded by agencies like the EPA, NOAA, and Chesapeake Bay Trust, the study examined existing public messaging tools and recommended simpler, community-focused approaches to reduce fish consumption and sharing. These cultural practices, while rooted in necessity, pose significant health risks and require targeted, accessible outreach strategies.
The findings point to broader, interconnected issues of clean water, human health, and food security. Study sponsors hope to use this research to spark community discussions and develop long-term solutions that address not only fishing practices but also the systemic challenges tied to environmental and public health.
